How to Choose a Chiropractor

Can a chiropractor help me with my problem?
A doctor of chiropractic (D.C.) will perform a thorough examination to diagnose the cause of your problem. This will determine if chiropractic treatment can help you. If necessary, he/she may order special tests such as x-rays or lab tests. Your D.C. will then explain your diagnosis, recommend a treatment plan and discuss treatment options. If at any time it is discovered that you require attention from a medical doctor, your chiropractor will refer you to the appropriate medical specialist.

The following are guidelines on things to look for and things to avoid when choosing a chiropractor. Many of these items can be applied to other health care providers as well.

Things to look for

  • Referral from friend or family
Possibly the best way to choose a chiropractor is to get a referral from someone whose opinion you value (such as a friend or family member). Ask someone who has been treated by a chiropractor and was satisfied with the care.
  • Referral from your medical doctor
Although in the past M.D.s and D.C.s did not work together closely, today many medical doctors recognize the role that chiropractors can play in the treatment of patients with musculoskeletal problems. Your M.D. may be able to refer you to a reputable chiropractor.
  • Advanced Training
Some chiropractors have additional training in certain areas after graduating from chiropractic school. This is somewhat similar to medical specialties. The areas of study most related to spine care are orthopedics, rehabilitation, and sports medicine. Chiropractors who have this official training will have the following credentials:

 Orthopedics < DABCO
 Rehabilitation  CCRD/DACRB
 Sports Medicine  CCSP/DABCSP
